NGC 5888 is a 13.4 mag light barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Bear Guardian . It is estimated to be 396 million light years from the Milky Way .
It was discovered on April 9, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "vF, vS, resolvable".
