NGC 1253 is a barred spiral galaxy of Hubble type SBc in the constellation Eridanus , the 76 million light-years from an estimated Milky Way is removed. Together with the closely neighboring galaxy NGC 1253A , it forms the galaxy pair Arp 279 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This pair of galaxies belongs to the class interacting double galaxies .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on September 20, 1784 .
