NGC 1247 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 174 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 175,000 ly. Together with NGC 1241 , NGC 1242 , PGC 11824, and PGC 11937 , it forms the NGC 1241 group .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1238 and IC 1897 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on December 10, 1798 .
