IC 1897 is a bar-spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation of the Hubble type SB in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 218 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 30,000 ly. 
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1238 , NGC 1247 , IC 303 , among others .
The object was discovered on January 24, 1900 by Herbert Alonzo Howe .
