NGC 1278 = IC 1907 is an elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E2 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is an estimated 277 million light years from the Milky Way , has a diameter of about 115,000 ly, and is a member of the Perseus cluster Abell 426 .
The galaxies NGC 1274 , NGC 1275 , NGC 1277 , NGC 1281 lie in the same region of the sky .
The object was discovered by the astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on February 14, 1863 with the help of his 18.7 inch telescope and was later listed in the New General Catalog by Johan Dreyer . Guillaume Bigourdan rediscovered the object on October 22, 1884, and it was recorded in the index catalog as IC 1907 .
