NGC 1283 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E1 in the constellation Perseus the northern sky . It is an estimated 305 million light years away from the Milky Way , about 60,000 light years in diameter, and is a member of the Perseus Cluster Abell 426 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1275 , NGC 1278 , NGC 1279 , NGC 1282 .
The object was discovered on October 23, 1884 by the astronomer Guillaume Bigourdan .
