NGC 1280 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Cetus south of the celestial equator . It is an estimated 305 million light years from the Milky Way .
The object was discovered on December 19, 1881 by the French astronomer Édouard Jean-Marie Stephan .
