NGC 1285 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb / P in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 233 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 105,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1286 and NGC 1303 .
The Type IIn supernova SN 2004F was observed here.
The object was discovered by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest on October 28, 1865 .
