NGC 1274 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 291 million light years from the Milky Way , about 70,000 ly in diameter, and a member of the Perseus Cluster Abell 426 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1273 , NGC 1275 , NGC 1277 , NGC 1278 .
The object was discovered on December 4, 1875 by Lawrence Parsons, 4th Earl of Rosse .
