NGC 1269 = NGC 1291 is a lenticular ring galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a with an unusual inner bar and outer ring structure in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 32 million light years from the Milky Way , about 125,000 light years in diameter, and the brightest galaxy in Eridanus.
The object was discovered by James Dunlop on September 2, 1826 and cataloged as Dun 487 . In 1836, John Herschel described it again. When Johan Ludvig Emil Dreyer finally created the New General Catalog published in 1888, he did not recognize this double observation and assigned the numbers NGC 1291 for Dunlops and NGC 1269 for Herschel's observation.
