NGC 1288 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Fornax the southern sky . It is estimated to be 198 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 135,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky is the galaxy IC 1913 .
On July 17, 2006, the amateur astronomer Berto Monrad discovered the Type Ia supernova SN 2006dr with his 30 centimeter telescope .
The object was discovered on November 19, 1835 by the astronomer John Herschel .
