U. 2 earlier, SFF-8639 called, is a hardware - interface for the connection of SSDs on computer or storage - backplanes . It consists of several connector variants (for connection to motherboards and for connection to the SSDs themselves). Electrically, the interface includes contacts for the transport of SAS , SATA and PCI Express (up to 4 lines / lanes) signals.

U.2 is intended for company SSDs that are installed in workstations, server or storage systems and addressed via the NVM Express software interface. U.2 supports hot swapping .
