NGC 1266 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 96 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 45,000 ly. In the same area of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1253 , NGC 1287 , NGC 1289 .
The object was discovered on September 20, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
