NGC 1248 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 98 million light years from the Milky Way . Together with NGC 1222 , PGC 11885 , PGC 12068 , PGC 12130 , and PGC 11968 it forms the NGC 1222 group .
The object was discovered on October 5, 1785 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
