NGC 1222 is a lens-shaped galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type S0 - in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 107 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years across. A Hubble telescope image released on November 7, 2016 shows that the main galaxy absorbs two dwarf galaxies and creates starburst activity in all three galaxies.

Together with NGC 1248 , PGC 11885 , PGC 12068 , PGC 12130 , and PGC 11968 , it forms the NGC 1222 group .

The object was discovered on December 5, 1883 by the astronomer Edouard Stephan with the help of an 80 cm reflector telescope and was later recorded by Johan Dreyer in his New General Catalog .
