NGC 1215 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 216 million light years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is listed as a member of the HCG 23 galaxy group .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1208 , NGC 1214 , NGC 1216 , IC 1880 .
The object was discovered on October 21, 1886 by the astronomer Lewis Swift .
