NGC 1223 is a compact elliptical galaxy of the Hubble-type cD in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 388 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 140,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1221 , NGC 1225 and IC 1886 .
The property was discovered by Francis Leavenworth in 1886 .
