NGC 1200 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is an estimated 179 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 155,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1195 , NGC 1196 , IC 285 , IC 287 .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2008R was observed here.
The object was discovered on November 27, 1785 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
