NGC 1200 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is an estimated 179 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 155,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1195 , NGC 1196 , IC 285 , IC 287 .

The Type Ia supernova SN 2008R was observed here.

The object was discovered on November 27, 1785 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
