NGC 1187 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (r) c in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 60 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of around 100,000 ly. With PGC 11469, it has a companion galaxy measuring around 25,000 ly .
In the past 30 years, astronomers have observed two supernova explosions in this galaxy: in October 1982 SN 1982R , in 2007 SN 2007Y .
The object was discovered on December 9, 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel .
