NGC 1174 = NGC 1186 is a faint barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 128 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light-years across. The mass of the central black hole in its center was estimated to be around 30 million solar masses using the luminosity of its bulge in a certain band and comparison with similar objects. Together with NGC 1171 and IC 284 , it forms the NGC 1186 group .
The object was discovered by William Herschel on October 27, 1786 . It was independently observed and described by Lewis Swift on August 31, 1883 . It was not recognized as identical to the nebula cataloged by Herschel, which led to the entry NGC 1174 .
