IC 284 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type SD in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 127 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1171 and NGC 1186 , it forms the NGC 1186 group .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1174 , NGC 1175 , NGC 1177 , IC 288 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 27, 1888 .
