IC 277 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc with a high rate of star formation in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 128 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years in diameter. Together with four other galaxies, it forms the NGC 1137 group ( LGG 79 ).

In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1153 and IC 273 .

The object was discovered on January 6, 1894 by the French astronomer Stéphane Javelle .
