IC 283 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S in the constellation Whale in the southern sky . It is an estimated 370 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1194 and NGC 1211 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 4, 1891 .
