IC 287 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type S in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 168 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 40,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 1196 , NGC 1200 , NGC 1204 , IC 285 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on December 7, 1893 .
