Michael P. Walters

Michael Patrick Walters (born November 5, 1942 in Portrush , Northern Ireland - † October 22, 2017 ) was a Northern Irish ornithologist and cryptozoologist .

Life

In 1970 Walter joined the bird department at the Natural History Museum in London. After the bird collection moved to Tring in 1972, he became head of the oological department, where he was responsible for the world's largest bird egg collection . In May 2003, Walters ended active museum service, but he remained associated with the bird department for several years, first working on type specimens as part of a scholarship program of the Leverhulme Trust and then as a research assistant .

Walters is the author of numerous scientific articles published in the journals British Birds , Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club , Emu , Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society , Notornis , Ibis and Sandgrouse , among others . He also dealt with Gilbert and Sullivan and the theater of the Victorian era.

Walters published The Complete Birds of the World (1980), Eyewitness Handbook: Birds Eggs (1994), Extinct and Endangered birds in the collections of the Natural History Museum (1994, with Alan G. Knox ), A Concise History of Ornithology (2003) and Extinct Birds (2012, with Julian Pender Hume ).

Walters was a member of the Oriental Bird Club and the Ornithological Society of the Middle East . In 1992 he became a member of the International Society of Cryptozoology and from 1994 he was an editorial member of the last three issues of the annual journal Cryptozoology , which was discontinued in 1996 after 13 issues.
