Alan G. Knox
Alan Glasgow Knox (born December 4, 1950 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish ornithologist .
Life
In 1973, Knox received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen . In 1975 he developed the first computer-aided system for the localization of birds in Great Britain. In 1977 he was at the University of Aberdeen with the dissertation keratin Feather, morphology and ecology in the taxonomy of cross bills and redpolls for Ph.D. PhD. From 1977 to 1980 he was a research fellow at the Department of Zoology at the University of Aberdeen. From 1980 to 1981 he was a computer analyst and programmer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Aberdeen. From 1981 to 1989 he was senior research fellow at the bird department of the Natural History Museum at Tring . In 1990 he moved to the Buckinghamshire County Museum in Aylesbury , where he was most recently director of museum services at Buckinghamshire County Council. Since 1999 he has worked for the Natural Heritage Department of the City of Aberdeen .
Knox carried out studies on the evolution and taxonomy of some Palearctic passerine birds (especially crossbills and siskins ) and on bird feathers . His most famous articles include a report on a fraud case by Colonel Richard Meinertzhagen published in Ibis magazine in 1993 . Using the example of black siskins, Knox was able to demonstrate that of the 70 specimen copies from Meinertzhagen's collection, there were at least seven or eight stolen bird hides, which Meinertzhagen rearranged and relabeled.
Knox published the books BOU Checklist of Birds of Britain and Ireland (1992), Extinct and Endangered Birds in the collections of the Natural History Museum (1994, with Michael P. Walters ), and The Status of Birds in Britain and Ireland (2009). Together with Peter E. Lowther he wrote in 2000 the entries on the redpoll and hoary redpoll in the Encyclopedia Birds of North America . From 1974 to 1981 he published the North-East Scotland Bird Report .
