The continuous population decline since the middle of the 19th century is mainly due to the closure of small farms and the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.
economy
In earlier centuries the population lived largely as a self-sufficiency from field and pasture farming; Vegetables and small livestock were raised in the in-house gardens and stables.
history
In the Middle Ages there was a castle that was damaged or destroyed during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and was then rebuilt in the Renaissance style . It is possible that a previous building of today's church was also affected.
With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Gémages , L'Hermitière , Mâle , La Rouge , Saint-Agnan-sur-Erre and Le Theil were merged into a Commune nouvelle with the name Val-au-Perche and dispose of the new one Commune on the status of a Commune déléguée . The administrative headquarters are located in Le Theil.
