Le Theil (also: Theil-sur-Huisne ) is a town and commune Déléguée in the French commune of Val-au-Perche with 1,720 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Orne in the region of Normandy .

location

The place Le Theil is located on the southern edge of Normandy on the river Huisne at an altitude of about 100  m . The climate is influenced to a large extent by the sea and is therefore almost frost-free; Rain (approx. 660 mm / year) falls throughout the year.

The population growth of the place is mainly due to the settlement of smaller craft and industrial companies as well as increasing tourism, i. H. based in the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) .

economy

In earlier centuries the population lived largely as a self-sufficiency from field and pasture farming; Vegetables and small livestock were raised in the hotel's own gardens. In the 19th century, the station on the Paris – Brest railway line and Usine Abadie - a cigarette paper factory - were built ; the latter was closed in 1975.

Notre-Dame church

history

Le Theil already existed in the Middle Ages and had a castle. During the Hundred Years War , i. H. in 1428 the castle and town were besieged and largely destroyed by the soldiers of the Earl of Salisbury . The reconstruction of the church was in the hands of the local landlord (seigneur) , Duke John II of Alençon , comrade and advocate of Joan of Arc .

With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Gémages , L'Hermitière , Mâle , La Rouge , Saint-Agnan-sur-Erre and Le Theil were merged into a Commune nouvelle with the name Val-au-Perche and dispose of the new one Commune on the status of a Commune déléguée . The administrative headquarters are located in Le Theil.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque portal of the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption dates back to the 12th century; Destroyed in 1428, it was rebuilt in the late Gothic style in the years after 1450 and expanded to include a side aisle on the north side and a bell tower with a steep pointed spire. The nave is spanned by a vaulted wooden ceiling with tie rods ; the aisle has a rib vault . All components were restored or revised in the 19th century. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1975 .
  • All that remains of the Abadie paper mill, built in the 19th century, are ruins.
