NGC 1153 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 140 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light-years across. Together with four other galaxies, it forms the NGC 1137 group ( LGG 79 ).

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 273 and IC 277 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on December 13, 1784 .
