NGC 1144 is a Seyfert galaxy in the constellation Whale . It interacts violently with the galaxy NGC 1141 , which is only 20 kpc away from it , which creates special kinematics that lead to a highly distorted spiral structure. The interacting galaxies are listed in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 118 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies close to spiral galaxies and disturbing them (Arp catalog) .

The entry with the number 1144 in the New General Catalog (NGC) goes back to an observation made by the French astronomer Édouard Stephan in 1876 with a 31.5-inch telescope. Most likely, it was this galaxy that led to entry NGC 1142 , which goes back to an observation by Albert Marth with a 48-inch mirror telescope in early October 1864.
