NGC 1128 is a pair of merging galaxies in the constellation Whale . The distance to the Milky Way is about 311 million light years . The object consists of PGC 11188, an elliptical galaxy of type E0, and PGC 11189, an elliptical galaxy of type E3.
In the center of this structure, the nuclei of the two components, two supermassive black holes , circle each other at a distance of 25,000 light years and slowly approach each other. They cause huge radio emissions and the “ swirling ” jets seen in the picture .
The radio source is known in professional circles under the name 3C 75 .
The object is a member of the Abell 400 galaxy cluster .
The discovery of NGC 1128 on October 8, 1886 is attributed to Lewis Swift , but the position published in 1886 differs by 5 arc minutes.
