NGC 1162 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Eridanus the southern sky . It is estimated to be 174 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across.
The galaxy IC 271 is located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on November 27, 1785 .
