NGC 1172 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 72 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1180 , NGC 1181 , NGC 1188 , NGC 1189 .
The object was on 30 December 1785 by the astronomer William Herschel using a 18.7-inch - telescope discovered.
