NGC 1172 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 72 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1180 , NGC 1181 , NGC 1188 , NGC 1189 .

The object was on 30 December 1785 by the astronomer William Herschel using a 18.7-inch - telescope discovered.
