course
The Firschnitzbach rises south of the Firschnitzscharte ( 2768 m above sea level ) in a basin of the Virger Nordkette between Zinizachspitze ( 2754 m above sea level ), Mittereggspitze ( 3044 m above sea level ), Nördlicher Göriacher Röte ( 3011 m above sea level) . ), Southern Göriacher Röte ( 3020 m above sea level ), Bretterspitze ( 3001 m above sea level ) and Pegömlspitze ( 2726 m above sea level ). It then flows south through the high valley Firschnitz and after reaching the tree line then down through the forest. In the middle course it passes the All Saints Chapel and the town of Marin on the right slope and then passes through Göriach and the west of Virgen-Dorf. In the lower reaches the brook passes agricultural areas before it flows into the lower Isel on the left.
Torrent control
On August 4, 2012, the Frischnitzbach swept away a mudslide that damaged 22 houses and tore away eight bridges and pedestrian walkways. The electricity and drinking water supplies were also interrupted, so that around 1,000 households were temporarily without electricity. According to later reports, a total of 30 properties and 20 farms were directly affected, the damage volume was put at 2.3 million euros. In July 2015, torrent and avalanche barriers began to prevent such events on the Firschnitzbach. The main part of the six million euro construction project was a large bed load metering barrier and an avalanche barrier. Around 62 percent of the costs were borne by the federal government, 22 percent was borne by the state, 10 percent by the municipality and six percent by the state road administration. The 17.8 meter high sediment retention barrier with a total span of 75 meters was completed in 2016, the entire project is to be implemented by the end of 2021.
