NGC 1191 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is estimated to be 412 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 ly in diameter. The galaxy is considered part of the Hickson Compact Group HCG 22 , but is much further away than the other members.
The object was discovered on December 2, 1885 by the astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
