NGC 1180 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is an estimated 420 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 1172 , NGC 1181 , NGC 1188 , NGC 1189 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on December 31, 1885 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
