NGC 1161 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 93 million light years from the Milky Way and about 73,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1160 , it forms the isolated pair of galaxies KPG 86 . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 274 and IC 275 .

The property was designed by the astronomer William Herschel using on October 7, 1784 a 18.7-inch - telescope discovered.
