NGC 1214 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Eridanus south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 216 million light years from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years across. The galaxy is listed as a member of the HCG 23 galaxy group .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1208 , NGC 1215 , NGC 1216 , IC 1880 .
The object was discovered on October 21, 1886 by the astronomer Lewis Swift .
