NGC 1229 is an active bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBb / P in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 483 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 200,000 ly. Together with NGC 1228 , NGC 1230 and IC 1892 , it forms the chain of galaxies Arp 332 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class chains of galaxies .
The property was discovered by Francis Leavenworth in 1886 .
