NGC 145 = Arp 19 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (s) dm in the constellation Whale in the southern sky . It is around 188 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 100,000 light years .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of three-armed spiral galaxies (Arp catalog) . NGC 145 was discovered on October 9, 1828 by the British astronomer John Frederick William Herschel .
