NGC 170 is an elliptical dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 195 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 20,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 164 , NGC 173 , NGC 182 , IC 40 , among others .
The object was discovered on November 3, 1863 by the German astronomer Albert Marth .
