NGC 183 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E4 in the constellation Andromeda on the northern sky . It is an estimated 249 million light years from the Milky Way and about 125,000 light years across. 
The galaxies NGC 181 , NGC 184 , IC 43 lie in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on November 5, 1866 by the astronomer Truman Henry Safford .
