NGC 172 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBbc with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Whale south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 137 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years across . Together with NGC 168 and NGC 177 it forms the (optical?) Galaxy trio KTS 4 .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 167 .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the astronomer Frank Muller .
