NGC 173 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 199 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light-years across. Together with five other galaxies, it forms the NGC 192 group or LGG 10 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 164 , NGC 170 , NGC 182 , IC 40 .
The object was discovered on December 28, 1790 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
