NGC 179 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 268 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxy NGC 209 is located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
