NGC 197 is a lenticular galaxy of Hubble type SB0 in the constellation whale on the celestial equator , the 188 million estimated light years from the Milky Way 's center. Together with NGC 192 , NGC 196 and NGC 201 it forms the Hickson compact group HCG 7.
The object was discovered on October 16, 1863 by the German astronomer Albert Marth .
