NGC 171 = NGC 175 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab of the Hubble type Sab in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 176 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 ly in diameter.

The type IIP supernova SN 2009hf was observed here.

The object was discovered on October 20, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel . His son John Herschel also later observed this galaxy. However, the double observation was not recognized and so it was given the number NGC 171 .
