NGC 166 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 271 million light-years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 70,000 ly. a. the galaxies IC 27 and IC 28 .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
