NGC 142 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 359 million light years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy trio together with NGC 143 and NGC 144 .
The object was discovered in 1886 by the American astronomer Frank Muller .
