NGC 118 is an active , compact galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type C in the constellation Cetus south of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 507 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light-years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 113 , NGC 114 , NGC 120 , NGC 124 .
The object was discovered on September 23, 1867 by the American astronomer Truman Henry Safford .
